What we believe about addiction:
- Addiction is a symptom of what has occurred in ones life
- Addiction has a psychological, biological and neurological basis
- People can and do recover from active addiction
- There is no one type fits all for recovery
- The choice to seek recovery is incredibly difficult and requires determination
Facts about drug and alcohol use:
- According to SAMHSA’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 23.9 million persons (9.2 percent of the U.S. population) aged 12 or older used an illicit drug or alcohol in 2012
- Scientific research since the mid–1970s shows that treatment can help patients addicted to drugs stop using, avoid relapse, and successfully recover their lives.
- Addiction is a complex disease that includes factors such as past trauma, neurobiology, brain chemistry, and behavioral changes
- Addiction recovery is not a short term or easy process
